Searching for Diverse Cartoons

Hello!

My name is Shayne Walton and I'm an educator in New York City. My colleagues and I have noticed as we are creating our worksheets for our all Black and Hispanic students that there are very few cartoon drawings that reflect kids who look like them and if they are, they're typically almost a caricature of these children. We're trying to work on changing that and creating a website to collect these diverse cartoon drawings.

We're reaching out to your organization to see if some of your members may be interested in creating some cartoons that we can upload onto our website so they will populate onto Google Images. Representation matters. The more images we have, the better. Our website is www.diversecartoons.com. You're part of our initial outreach, so we'll be adding on images as we receive them from different organizations around the country.

We're looking for cartoon drawings of different genders, ethnicities, races, abilities, and more. I've attached the more stereotypical images that I tend to find. Some ideas that we've had that we notice aren't created very often are:

  • Boys/girls of color playing sports, drawing, sitting down, standing up

  • Adults of color

  • Darker skin tones

  • Wearing hijabs/head scarves

  • People in wheelchairs

  • Different family structures (two moms, two dads, single parents, raised by grandparents, etc.)

  • Everything!

We would be so appreciative of your help in this and give you credit on the design and put you on our page of supporters.

Please reach out with any questions.
